Thatched roof. Roses round the door. Stroll to the local shop for the papers. The pub for company. Idyllic. The stuff retirement dreams are made of…
Until the car breaks down and you can’t get to the doctor’s (dentist, supermarket …) because the local bus service only operates twice a day and kind Mr Jones from the post office is on holiday, so that’s your lift scuppered.
Retiring to the country might be exactly right for you but do remember to consider the potential pitfalls too.
There are lots of things to think about if you’re planning a move for your retirement – all dependent on your own personal retirement aspirations and situation. Here’s just three to get you started:
- is there convenient access to health and medical care?
- what’s the public transport system like?
- is your dream cottage ‘future-proofed’ in terms of accessibility and up-keep?
Spend some time in your chosen location. Chat to the locals. Take a stroll around. And if you’re comfortable with what you find, go for it!
