Brisk walks by the sea. Delightful fresh air. That special light you only find on the coast. Seagulls. Sunshine and lapping waves. Oh, to be beside the sea!
This might sound like the perfect retirement scenario, but what about when it’s pouring with rain and a storm’s lashing the beach? When local shops shut up and restaurants close out of season? Will the jaded, tired atmosphere leave you miserable and lonely or exhilarated and refreshed?
Retiring to the seaside might be just perfect for you but do remember to consider the potential pitfalls too.
There are lots of things to think about if you’re planning a move for your retirement – all dependent on your own personal retirement aspirations and situation. Here’s a couple to get you started:
- is there an active, year-round community?
- is there a big seasonal shift in population; with so many summer visitors that you can’t park your car when you pop to the shops and so few in the winter so that the shops are closed anyway?
Spend some time in your chosen location. Chat to the locals. Take a stroll around. And if you’re comfortable with what you find, go for it!
